Die Legende besagt, dass der heilige Jakobus im Jahre 44 nach Christus vom König Herodes ermordet wurde. Seine Jünger nahmen den Leichnam bei Nacht und Nebel an sich und segelten auf einem wunderbarlichen Schiff durchs Mittelmeer, um Spanien herum nach Norden und landeten schließlich an der galizischen Küste. Sie trugen den Leichnam an Land und begruben ihn nach vielen wunderbaren Ereignissen an der von Gott bezeichneten Stelle. Dort wurde das Grab dann im neunten Jahrhundert von einem frommen Einsiedler entdeckt. Es gab im Laufe der Geschichte viele Zweifler an der Echtheit des Apostelgrabes. Der prominenteste war sicherlich Martin Luther, der sogar der Meinung war, dass sich wohl eher ein toter Hund in dem Sarkophag befindet als der Leichnam des Apostels! Zudem findet sich in den ersten schriftlichen Aufzeichnungen über die Missionstätigkeit kein einziger Hinweis darauf, dass Jakobus in Spanien missioniert haben soll. Die geschichtliche Bedeutung und der Stellenwert des Jakobsweges für jeden einzelnen Pilger wird durch die Tatsache, dass das Apostelgrab gar nicht existiert, in keinster Weise geschmälert: Das beweisen gerade heute tausende von Pilgern, die auf diesem Weg näher zu sich selbst, zu ihren eigenen Bedürfnissen und damit näher zu Gott finden!
Die Wege in Österreich gehen weitgehend auf eine Privatinitiative des Autors Peter Lindenthal zurück, der 1997 damit begonnen hatte, durch Nachforschungen im Gelände einen Ost-West-Weg von Wolfsthal nach Feldkirch zu erschließen und die Route mit Holztäfelchen sporadisch bezeichnete. (1)
Mittlerweile wurden einige Abschnitte, z. B. Göttweig-Melk, in Oberösterreich, Salzburg und Tirol von Tourismusorganisationen sowie teils in Eigeninitiative beschildert. (2)
Die Pilger sollen hochwertige Lebensmittel mitnehmen, weil sie auf dem Weg große körperliche Leistungen vollbringen. Dazu passend empfehle ich heute eine klassische spanische Mandeltorte, die nicht nur für die Pilger, sondern auch allen Freude machen kann: die Zubereitung ist leicht, die Torte hält wochenlang und ein kleines Stück genügt um satt zu sein.

Zutaten:
6 Eier
27,5 dag Kristallzucker
Zitronenschale
50 dag geschälte, fein geriebene Mandeln
1. Backrohr auf 150 Grad vorheizen.
2. Eine Springform mit Öl bestreichen, Boden mit Backpapier auslegen.
3. Eier schaumig rühren (nicht verzweifeln, das ist Knochenarbeit ohne Rührstab, quasi ein Vorgeschmack auf den Pilgerweg!), Zucker einrieseln lassen und die Masse dick cremig aufschlagen. Geriebene Zitronenschale und eine Prise Salz zugeben. Mandel löffelweise zumischen.
4. Masse in die Form füllen und ca. eine Stunde backen. (Wenn man die Torte mit einem Holzspieß ansticht und keine Masse daran haftet, ist die Torte fertig gebacken.)
5. Torte aus dem Rohr nehmen und in der Form auskühlen lassen.
6. Mit Staubzucker bestreuen und servieren. (Traditionell gehört darauf das Kreuz der Jakobsritter, man kann ein passendes Muster im Internet schnell finden, ausdrucken, ausschneiden und verwenden.)
